Description

Bitter wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is rightfully considered sacred and one of the most powerful and sacred plants, often referred to as the Divine Tree. It is believed to connect humans with nature and can cleanse both the physical and spiritual worlds. Wormwood can protect against the evil eye and negative energies, and ward off evil spirits, making it an effective home talisman. According to Slavic beliefs, where there is wormwood, trouble will not come, and people will be healthy and happy. The scent of wormwood is unbearable for impurity, and it repels evil spirits. Wormwood is also used for smudging to prepare the space for rituals or to cleanse a sick household member, as it effectively neutralizes negative energy.

Why Smudge a Space?

Smudging a home with herbs is a very powerful method of space cleansing, which people have used since ancient times. It’s harmful when a house is filled with negative energy, as it not only brings fatigue, irritability, arguments, and financial loss, but also illnesses. This is why it’s necessary to cleanse your home from time to time. This kind of energetic cleaning should be done 3-4 times a year or whenever you feel the need, similar to a deep cleaning of your living space.

Usage

Prepare the bundle, a source of fire, a container, and some sand. Perform the smudging with windows open. For one session, it’s enough to use a quarter of the bundle or less.

To light the bundle, bring its end to a candle flame or fire. Hold it until the end starts to smolder, then blow out the flame. The bundle will smolder for a few minutes.

If you need to direct the smoke towards an object or person, you can use a ritual fan or blow gently to guide the smoke. If you are smudging a room or part of it, walk around the space with the bundle in a clockwise direction. Set your intention for the smudging.

You’ll also need a container to collect the ashes and extinguish the bundle. The container should contain a bit of sand, salt, or soil. Alternatively, you can extinguish the bundle by rubbing the smoldering part against a ceramic or metal surface.

After smudging, open the windows to air out the space. Before leaving the room, make sure the bundle is completely extinguished.

A completely safe method of use is to hang a small bundle of herbs in your home (preferably in the bedroom or hallway).

Caution

Be careful, as the heat from the bundle can be enough to burn your skin or the surface where the container with the herbs is placed. To extinguish the bundle, place it in sand or use a stick or spoon. It’s not advisable to extinguish with water.

Be cautious when handling fire. Use solid, non-flammable surfaces, and keep away from flammable objects like carpets, curtains, or upholstered furniture.

Keep out of reach of children.
